share-a-chair

"share-a-chair" is a second-hand chair that has been sawn into two parts with added legs.

As base material antique chairs of the established furniture manufacturer "Thonet" were used. First these chairs were provided with additional 2x2 legs. Then each "Thonet" chair was sawn into two autonomous halves with a "Stihl" chainsaw in a performance. These can stand side by side and thereby retain their original function, to offer a seat for one person. In its new form, divided from each other, the two halves of the chair provide two separate seats for two people and thereby receive an additional feature. In the latter case the way of use has to adapt to the newly designed object. Since the reduction of the seating surface causes the conventional way of sitting to be uncomfortable, the two parts of the chair have to be rotated by 90 degrees, so that the halved wings of the backrest become armrests. This way two people can face each other on "one" chair. The possibility to share a chair has a practical use, if more people come together than sitting accommodations are available.
